Autumn.

It is a long road
back to Summer Dreams
to that splendor in the grass
we anticipated so.

These colors
lull us to hope,
reds and oranges
and sinewy browns
confuse the next curves.

Autumn is
a courtship game,
a night at the movie house
with candy and popcorn,
wind howling outdoors,
night creeping from behind the curtains.

Only  the boyfriend sits tall and strong
driving with confidence
on slippery roads.

It's a guessing game how it will all end.

  1. A very interesting conceit, Rosaria! And it works so well.

I picture candy corn as that candy.

  2. We never know what's round the corner, do we? Best to sit back with our popcorn and candy and enjoy the ride!

  3. ah, rosaria))) it is a wonderful poem but knowing (some) of your life makes it all the more sobering. the understatement of the movie carries an edge that sinks so readily into me.

  4. Only the boyfriend sits tall and strong - that speaks to me. Those slippery roads must be navigated somehow, someway.
